[Whenever Hunter - or Casey - leaves the apartment for the day, they'll find a wrapped box left at their doorstep. The box is addressed to the both of them, with two separately wrapped gifts inside.
For Hunter, he'll find a sweater knit in the most vibrant gold color, with a matching scarf and mittens. And just a very simple note card inside:]
[ Hunter finds the package after school that day; he winds up being ENTIRELY too suspicious of it until he realizes Rue's name on it, and then he just feels real sheepish.
But the sweater itself ... it's beautiful. He's always wanted something knitted. It always looked so COZY.
Rue doesn't get a message back right away. Instead, they get an awkward, blurry selfie of Hunter wearing the sweater, beaming with more joy than they've seen on his face yet. ]
[Hunter receives a scattering of messages and texts over the course of the night, a large rush at first before spacing out every few hours, until Hunter responds.]
[Hunter, there is a turtle in Casey's bed. He hasn't moved much the last day or so, but everyone else has been rotating in and out. At some point, probably while Hunter's walking by the room, there's a faint whisper.]
[ Hunter has done all he can to help, but mostly he’s stayed out of the way? He’s friends with Leo, but they aren’t quite close yet, and he doesn’t want to get in the way…
But he pauses at that quiet noise. Hesitates? Pokes his head in. ]
[ How to answer their question ... "well" isn't accurate, but not for any reason connected to the fae nonsense. He's dealing with something else entirely tonight. ]
[Christmas Eve arrives and there is a package for Hunter (and one for Casey). Inside is: some nice gardening tools, a modern slang dictionary, and a recipe book for different cultural dishes. With it is a card: So you both can keep trying new stuff together.]
[Be it handed over at the party or left in their mailbox. Hunter has a carefully wrapped gift.
Upon being opened, Hunter will find a very handmade colorful shirt. Peter has hidden a few pockets along the lining of the shirt as well.
Included is a note.]
Hey, Hunter!
I'm glad you're here and doing well. Looking forward to hanging out more. I hope the shirt fits okay. I had to guess at your measurements a little. If you need me to take it in or out, tell me.
My darling Hunter, Happy holidays to my most energetic and lively son. I can hardly believe it has been such a short time of knowing one another when you've already made such an impact upon my life. Your endless excitement for the world around you has been a much needed reminder to all of us to stop taking the little things for granted. There is no doubt within my heart that you will grow up to be a giving, gentle man, but as your mother, I am just selfish enough to ask that you do not grow up too quickly. You've been through so much, so it's alright to let yourself be a kid, just a little bit longer. Here's to the first year of many together. I love you endlessly. Affectionately yours, Mom
[Hunter will find a carefully wrapped present for him from Hob on Christmas morning, whether by his side when he wakes after the slumber party at Rue's or delivered to his doorstep.]
[ Hunter is 100% there for Christmas morning, and Hob is going to get to see in person how teary-eyed Hunter gets opening a present for him. Sewing kit!! And an invitation to share it ...
Yeah he's sniffling and rubbing his face on his shirt. ]
[At some point after the big family sleepover, presumably after an equally-big family breakfast (and maybe a little bit of big family post-breakfast lounging) it's time to go home. Everyone has their own methods. Maybe Leo portals the others. Donnie's got his jetpacks.
Hunter and Casey, of course, fly back. Or at least Hunter does, and Casey's all too happy to hold fast and enjoy the ride. Casey has a backpack with their thus-far-acquired Christmas swag, and he also has a big grin on his face. Holidays are amazing. Christmas is amazing! Who knew. (Basically everyone knew.)]
So since you made everything all official at the party, is this our first official boyfriend flight? Or something else because we already had one?
[That bracelet Hunter gave him has not left his wrist this whole time- and won't any time soon.]
[ It's been so much family. SO much. And it's all been so good? But as soon as Casey indicates he's ready to go, Hunter is maybe just a bit relieved to convert Flapjack into a staff again and take to the skies. His own bundle of presents hangs carefully from the underside of the staff. So good ... so much. His own smile is quieter, but no less happy.
Also, he laughs. ]
We can have two first flights. I'm pretty sure that's allowed.
[Whether its at the family Christmas party or left alongside Casey's gift, Hunter can expect a gift from Peter.
The gift is carefully wrapped in red paper, once unboxed reveals a men's leather flight jacket. It is something Peter found second hand, but figured Hunter would like with a little modification. The jacket still has a good amount of use left on it. The jacket lining has been replaced with something soft, a little plush. The pattern is of the night sky constellations. Peter sewed in a rough shape of Casey's mask for Hunter to find amongst the actual constellations.
Peter included several patches for Hunter as well to put on the jacket. The patches range a little in quality, since Peter made a few, struggled on making it look perfect, but he tried. Ranging from a flying cardinal patch, an owlbear patch, a needle jabbed into a spool of thread shaped patch. The two patches he purchased were a rainbow shaped patch, and another patch of a pair of scissors.
Tucked in one of the pockets is a very small hand sized stuffed cardinal. It's far from perfect, but something cute to look at.
Included is a note.]
Hunter,
It's been really nice getting to know you, and be your friend. I hope you like the gift. I modified it a little for you. It might be big now, but you'll grow into it.
I left the patches off so you could place them wherever you want.
[ Hunter has been very bad at gifts so far - he's still getting used to it! - and that's the primary reason why Peter doesn't get a box back the day of, but rather a couple days later. Hunter only really brought things for Rue and Casey and has been both delighted and mortified to get gifts he wasn't ready for.
But soon enough, Peter gets a knock on his door - a muffled scramble as Hunter blinks away - and a box gets dropped off. Inside is a cute lil metal spider friend that wriggles convincingly when petted. He seems to have managed it with some teeny tiny glyphs on its underside.
For once, his written communications AREN'T in all caps, mostly because he actually used a pen this time. ]
Peter,
I'm really glad you gave me a second chance! I probably wouldn't have given me another chance. But you're a pretty cool human and friend.
This jacket is amazing and I'm wearing it every time I go flying from now on. I think Flapjack was a little jealous of the cardinal? Then he realized he could use it as a pillow and now it's his favorite thing. We spent all last night sewing on the patches together.
[It's just before breakfast that Rue pulls Hunter away just for a little stretch of time, a private moment between just the two of them, while Hob and Casey handle getting everything prepared in the kitchen.]
Is it quite silly that even after all of these I'm still feeling a touch nervous?
[Draxum's mindset still isn't doing so great, tbh, but unlike with that call he's now at least rested, and Hunter's situation is a priority. So about two days after he speaks with Casey, Hunter will find a voice message left for him on his Relic around lunch.]
I assume by this point Jones has informed you of what he and I discussed. [And you know, the need to do some magic talk so they can make sure this whole plan goes off without a hitch.] If you're ready to speak with me, I'm available for the next few hours.
[He's not sure what Hunter's schedule is like, but hopefully he'll catch him. If not, he'll just try to call back tomorrow.]
[No one knocked, but something has been dropped off outside the door of Apartment #304 today—an open wicker basket made out of purple vines. There are three items nestled inside of it: one box for Casey, one box for Hunter, and a pint of blackberries contained in a glass jar that's cool to the touch.
Inside the box marked for Hunter is a three-section staff that has a golden glow about it until it's picked up. Unlike the photo, the three sectioned pieces can be locked in place and converted into a full-length staff form. Along with it, there's also a letter.]
Don't worry about failing to keep your promise. In hindsight, it's not something I should have asked of you in the first place, and I apologize if it's caused you undue stress. Are youCan I Remember to eat well and keep your strength up.
The item before you is called a sansetsukon. It's a mystic weapon of the same esteemed caliber as the ones the turtles used to have, before they came into their abilities. It's designed to draw out and channel its wielder's latent mystic powers, until the individual can control them without guidance.
What you do with it is up to you. You may seek me for instruction, or train with it on your own. That's what the boys did. Either way, it is my gift to you.
— Baron Draxum
PS. I'll be contacting you in the coming days about the palistrom seed. We should start growing it, so if you've not determined a place to plant it yet, choose one soon.
[ It's beautiful. Hunter is frankly a little concerned that he broke it somehow until he reads through the letter? But then he reassembles it and ... oh, it feels right in his hands, doesn't it? Something seems to almost pulse with energy just barely out of his reach.
Within a day or two (timelines are wonky), Draxum gets a text message: ]
THANK YOU SIR I WON'T LET YOU DOWN I'LL PRACTICE WITH IT EVERY DAY FLAPJACK SEEMS A LITTLE JEALOUS
ANYWAY I THINK THAT WE SHOULD PUT THE TREE IN RUE'S GARDEN THEY CAN HELP WITH SHAPING IT TOO
[It's a given that Casey's been pulling long hours for the robird project for weeks now: staying after hours at school, working away on the bench he's set up in his room, threading together synthetic feathers in the living room during movie nights, going out into the woods to study and sketch birds as field research. And it's been a long month of kind of a lot happening. Emotions have run high, then low, then back again... and as the time for the ritual swiftly approaches, just a few more steps to go, Casey's feeling the burnout.
Finally, though, finally, his part is done, so despite his growing weariness, he feels pretty energized as he arrives home.]
[ Hunter, meanwhile, has done what he can to support. Fetching materials, helping make portions of the bird if needed... or just doing what he can to keep food available. Which. Honestly means a lot of pre-made stuff if he's responsible. He made eggs!! That's a new thing for him!
That's what he's working on when Casey arrives home late. He gladly leaves the pan on the stove and goes to the door when he hears his boyfriend return. ]
[So, last night was kind of weird, sorry Hunter. Everything had been normal right up to about 9PM when a sudden call from April had led to Casey rushing out the door, staff in hand, with a hasty apology and a promise to explain when he returned. After that was radio silence for... hours. Many hours. Though if Hunter were to send any messages checking in, he'd get at least a thumbs-up response. Casey was busy, but signs indicated he was... okay? Ish? But yes, busy.
It isn't until early morning that he returns, and there's a quiet, tentative knock on Hunter's bedroom door, and it cracks open a second later, with an equally quiet call.]
[ So many hours. And Hunter had, indeed, sent messages, and received thumbs up emojis, which were good, but - but -
But he's not sleeping like that. After about 2 AM he does retreat from his wide-eyed vigil in the main room, but he's still too wired to sleep. He's watching his relic like a hawk, trying not to freak out, trying not to picture what horrible things could be happening to Casey -
He nearly falls out of bed, the turns so fast. ]
Casey!
[ He immediately flings the door wide open and goes for hug. ]
You are cordially invited to a sleepover at my house this Saturday(May 4th)! Ciel is also invited if he wants to come hang out. Amity and I will have everything set up for a super cool sleepover in the cottage living room.
Depending on Casey's schedule, we'd love to have him too! I know you guys are pretty busy with school though.
[ Hunter appears to be working on a particularly tricky round of homework, given that Flapjack is here to supervise from the nearby bowl of popcorn; he blinks and looks up when Casey comes in. ]
-- Which day is Mom's day? Saturdays?? I usually go over on Saturdays.
