Well - no but - I'd have to be really fast and that would stress me out!

[ He goes into their kitchen to get some hot cocoa going; he expects Casey needs a pick-me-up. ]

Oh yeah. I mean, I had a staff? But it was still super draining, and my control was awful.

[Hot cocoa sounds like the best pick-me-up.]

No wonder. It's really tough! Does your training help you build up, like, magic stamina?

[How big is your MP bar, Hunter, because Casey's level 1-]

[ SIGNIFICANTLY higher okay. He needs that staff but he sure is good with it.

Hunter starts boiling water for both for both of them and mixes powder into a cup. Thinks a moment, then grabs the little packet of marshmallows in the cupboard too. ]

Yep. That's pretty much it. Eventually you build up enough - uh - muscle I guess is the right word.

Like training a regular muscle, yeah. That makes sense.

[he stretches his hands out above himself, flexing his fingers, like what Master Michelangelo used to do when he was casting sometimes. That magic sensation... it didn't feel like anyone else's magic exactly, but he could feel a twinge of Rue, looking back. The fae magic he felt when they cast a spell on or around them. He'll have to reach out to them later and ask.]

...I kind of hope it's not temporary. Um- not to infringe on your territory or anything. [Blinking around and flying seems kind of like Hunter and Flapjack's thing. Though he'd be a long, long way from being competition for them. (More like a long long long long long long way-)]

It's not territory, it's more like -

[ Given his upbringing it's hard to verbalize, but Hunter thinks he knows the feeling? It takes him a moment to wrap his mouth around it. ]

Like you're learning to play the same sport at me. Just means we can do more things together.

Oh... yeah, that makes sense!

[He does actually feel a little better, having it described like that. Hunter has enough problems, he didn't want to cause some unknown new one, even by accident. But if Hunter's cool with it...

...well, this is all hypothetical! It might just go away by tomorrow.]

I have so much to learn already. At this rate we'll be training all day, every day. Familiar, right?

[This training is admittedly a lot more fun, between it being magic and the good company. Way more enjoyable than running endless katas on his own in a corner of the dojo.]

[ Hunter laughs a bit at that. Cocoa's done, so he emerges with a tray and two steaming cups; the marshmallows are tucked neatly to one side. ]

Familiar in a good way! And - maybe if I teach you how to teleport, you can teach me some of your moves?

[ He's seen those katas and he is VERY curious. ]

[Casey grins easily, forcing himself upright again so he can comfortably get himself one of the cocoas with a quiet thanks. The dizziness has settled again, now he just feels weary and sore, one of which the cocoa will help with. It really is like training muscles...]

I'd teach you either way. You wanna be a ninja?

[They're not quite mutant and not quite turtles, but they are teenage.]

[ Hunter plunks down next to him to enjoy his own mug. ]

I bet you could. You're a great fighter already. I think you just need some refinement, different techniques. Did you learn a particular style when you were a scout, or was it more generic? Like, did it have a name?

Uh - it was more generic, I guess? I don't think we called it anything specific.

[ He shakes some marshmallows into his drink. ]

[Once he's done with the marshmallows Casey dumps a whole handful into his, practically overflowing the mug. He needs that sugar rush.]

This is gonna sound kind of snobby, but I think there's something really beautiful about a standard form. You don't have to be totally rigid so it doesn't become predictable, but having a specific way to move and deal with any situation makes everything flow so much easier. Our family technique was the Lou Jitsu School of Ninjutsu, which melded six different martial artes, alongside its founder's own custom moves.

Whoa. That ... does sound great?

[ Hunter sips, then, fascinated as he listens. ]

I love rules and structure.

I was thinking that! and the great thing about Lou Jitsu style is that it mixes the usual rule set of standard martial arts with the wilder technique of Lou Jitsu himself. So you learn how to utilize those rigid techniques with unexpected finesse.

[Oops you've triggered his ninja nerd mode this time.]

Sensei once told me a story about how they lost their weapons and took out a whole group of villains using only frozen salmon and ladders.

Ladders? How do you fight with LADDERS?

[ Hunter is officially in awe. ]

[He gets a confident smirk out of Casey for that one.]

We should find a ladder and I'll show you.

[Best believe sensei taught him some of those moves.]

[ Well. If Hunter had a fast enough heartbeat, it would skip right about now. As it is he just stares at Casey and that face for a moment, totally forgetting everything else.

What were they talking about? Right, ladders. ]

-- tomorrow. Yeah. For sure. When you're not tired from teleporting.

[Casey settles back against the cushions of the couch, sipping his cocoa and looking pleased with himself. As if Christmas wasn't already exciting enough... now they have even more to look forward to.]

Tomorrow sounds good. I can still do sewing stuff today, though! I'm not so tired that I'm gonna skip out on that. I want to see what you're working on.

[And maybe start to figure out a patch for himself.]

Right. Uh - I got so distracted by the teleporting I forgot about that.

[ He sets his mug back down for a moment and stands. ]

Let me go get it.

[Casey nods, tucking his knees up to sit cross-legged, so he's not in the way of whatever spread Hunter's about to put all over the coffee table. Once they get going and he's had enough rest, he'll fetch his own project.]

[ Hunter comes back with a thrifted jeans jacket and a little cardboard box full of patches! He sets it next to the sewing kit he got from Hob. There's already a couple of patches clumsily applied: a cardinal and a pangolin. ]

It's been a little tricky so far, but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

[Immediately awed that he actually found a pangolin.]

Ohh, you got both of us! You sewed that on? It looks great!

[His stitching needs work, but that's what practice is for anyway. He leans in to peer at the contents of the box, curious of what other patches he's found.]

[ Spoons buy a lot of odd things, okay.

Hunter beams. And gladly passes over the box? He's got a wide variety, mostly animals, but also some odd things like. Cheese! Burgers. Cassette tapes. ]

You think so?

Yeah! And the more patches you do, the better you'll get. Are you going to cover it or pick your favourites?

[Some of them look a bit silly, but based on the collection he's looking at, that appears to be part of the fun. He sets his mug down to sift through the options, before lifting up a fish patch with a laugh.]

Hah! I found one. Wonder if there's a ladder in there, too.

[That'd be one combo that would confuse like 95% of the Folkmore population.]

I - uh - I think I'm going to cover this one? I kind of just want to try everything.

[ Speaking of, Hunter dumps the box out on the coffee table and starts sorting. Lo and behold, there's a ladder patch. ]
