Oh colors are a great idea. I - uh - I figured there'd be two lines, but I couldn't figure out how to do it without - um -

[ OBVIOUSLY, their relationship is fully romantic, but he doesn't want to get a Good Grade In Weird this time around. ]

[Casey gives him a curious look, not quite connecting the dots. He's never laid out a family tree before so for him this is all guesswork.]

Well - uh - we're dating, right? And also we're adopted by the same mom, so we're brothers.

I don't want to give anyone the idea that we're - uh - brothers who date??

Oh. [Casey's eyes widen, a mildly mortified understanding dawning in his eyes.] Ohhh. Yeah, that'd probably raise some questions.

[He thinks for a moment.]

If there's a written part of it, you could expand on the whole thing... but yeah, having us be connected just by the romantic line would be best. Just because Mom adopted us both doesn't mean we're brothers- Leo and Peter would have the same line.

... I forgot about Leo and Peter!

[ HOW. ]

I think you also forgot how against being brothers we both were before you even asked me out.

[That poor single hormone was working overtime that day, for SOME reason.]

I did also forget about that. I mean, I can mention that in the essay too.

Our family's gotten kind of complicated. It's probably a good idea to explain the stuff that might get questioned, yeah.

[Not a bad thing by any means - he's always had a weird family, and he loves it - but in theory he knows what a "normal" family might look like, and theirs can raise questions.]

[ Oh yeah. Hell, Hunter has questions of his own. ]

It's good, though. Right? I mean ...

[ He looks down at the tree. ]

Belos was simple.

[Casey opens his mouth, pauses to actually think before he puts his foot in it.]

...I mean... simple isn't bad. Though I wouldn't say Belos actually was simple. Most people don't, um. Clone their family. Or kill them. Or clone them some more.

[He tries to put it delicately, he really does.]

Um-! But the point is, simple isn't only bad, weird isn't only good. It depends on the person, not the relationship. If any of us were abusive towards you, it'd be bad no matter how weird or "normal" we might be.

Okay when you put it that way, I guess it wasn't simple.

[ He did NOT try to add the grimwalker crew. Only Ciel. ]

-- Right, no, I get it. You've always been nothing but amazing to me. Everyone here...

[No one can blame him for keeping it to just Ciel. Heck, no one could blame him if he wanted to omit Belos entirely.]

Here's the thing about family... you always get to choose it. It's not where you're born or who you're related to. It's okay to look at those parts that are bad for you and just...

[He reaches down and traces a line up from Hunter and Ciel, where Belos would be, and draws an X with his finger.]

...Cut them out.

[ Hunter stares down at the lil chart for a moment. Lifts his pen? It's just a mark on paper, but ...

But it feels like a lot. It IS a lot. Hunter's come a long way, but he's always referred to Belos as his uncle. He's never denied their relationship, as cruel as it was.

He gulps in a deep breath. Then scribbles out Belos's name. ]

[Casey watches quietly, waiting for him to decide, fully prepared to not judge if Hunter decided he wasn't ready. It's one thing to decide Belos is evil, it's another thing entirely to cut him off.

When Hunter does cross the name out, he smiles gently and offers his arms out. He's with you, BF. Time for a hug?]

[ It is ABSOLUTELY time for a hug. Hunter throws himself into Casey's arms and clings. ]

You're - right. I can just cut him out. He's not family any more.

[Casey wraps him up, holding tightly.]

Yeah, exactly. He doesn't deserve you. [One hand lifts, brushing soothingly through Hunter's hair.] I'm really proud of you.

[ Hunter just keeps clinging for the moment. Nods against him. ]

Yeah? You are?

Uh-huh. I've never had to do what you've done, but if I did, I dunno if I'd have the courage. You had to look at your whole life and change your perspective to get where you're at now. Admitting that things were wrong, when you always thought they were normal... that takes a lot of strength.

[He kisses the top of Hunter's head.]

That's the kind of strength you've got.

[ Oh. That's all true, of course. Things he has thought in fact!! And yet it's different hearing Casey lay them out like that.

He nods, sniffling a little. ]

I never thought of it as a strength... just that it was hard.

It is hard, but you did it anyway. That's part of why you're strong.

[He keeps petting through Hunter's hair, holding him close. It's good to be strong but also okay to need to be coddled sometimes, too.]

[ Hunter is more than happy to keep clinging. ]

Thank you - um - thank you. And sorry.

[Casey tilts his head questioningly at that.]

Sorry for what?

For being a lot of work in general??

[His eyes widen at that.]

You're not! Not even a little work!

You can say I'm a little work. Because I'm definitely that.
