3 - The Muck Pit

[ From the moment you walk into this painting, you can tell this is going to be DEEPLY unpleasant. You are somewhere deep inside a booming stone cavern. The walls must curve up to a point somewhere, given the darkness and the echo, but it's so far away that you can't see where that is. Closer above you is a great stone bridge, with a winding staircase cut into the side.

But more important is the thing that you came here for: a pit full of bubbling muck rests in the center of a dizzying set of alchemical tools. There are beakers of unknown fluids. There are crates of wooden scraps on top of curiously blue-tinged logs. An enormous set of lungs floating in a jar breathe in and out, sending some kind of gas into the pit via a tube. And a pale, distorted hand claws at the mud as someone - or something - struggles beneath the surface.

Belos is here. His hair is tied back as the regards the hand dispassionately; he is far more focused on the set of notes in front of him. ]

"Let's try a little more heat. See if we can't work out the ears this time."

[ He adjusts something a different tube going into the pit - and the creature in the mud screams. ]

[ Belos looks up at that. He doesn't quite seem to recognize Adrien this time; this is a figment rather than the Belos that Adrien fought before. ]

In theory, yes. But I need him to be perfect this time.

[eudaimoniac]

Ah, well, good.

[it's another crashing torrent of lightning for belos, another scramble to pull the boy up from the muck.]

[ OW WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS

Belos goes down in a torrent of lightning, spitting curses at Adrien. Meanwhile, Adrien can rescue another clone. He IS way more put together than the first one, at least? He looks fine actually. Except his ears are rounded instead of pointed...

The Guard watches with more existential horror. ]

I really hate looking at them.

[moving to try and get a better look at it, concerned.]

They always scream.

[ The shape under the mud is humanoid! More than that, it's familiar ...? That is absolutely Hunter under there. ]

[without hesitating at all, he's trying to shove this guy away so he can help him out of the mud.]

[ as soon as she lands there's a stiletto flying to bury itself deep in those notes. ]

Please step away from there!

[pyrighteous]

[ The notes go flying! And Belos whirls with a hiss. ]

You again.

[briarliar]

[ she's already leaping into the pit, the knife a temporary stall to keep Belos away as she tries to find the body attached to that arm and pull him up. ]

Hold on!

[pyrighteous]

[ She pulls, then, and someone starts to come up? It's ...

Hunter? Hunter's in there. He shivers miserably as she pulls him out. ]

Y-Yor?

Hello, Mr. Hunter.

[ she says this this is a normal run-in, not one through a deeply traumatized psyche that led her to pull him out of a muck pit with his megalomaniac uncle watching ]

I'm so glad you recognize me. That will make things much easier. Are you able to move?
