[moving to try and get a better look at it, concerned.]

[pyrighteous]

They always scream.

[ The shape under the mud is humanoid! More than that, it's familiar ...? That is absolutely Hunter under there. ]

[heartlands]

Hunter!

[without hesitating at all, he's trying to shove this guy away so he can help him out of the mud.]

[pyrighteous]

[ Belos is shoved? Rude?? And Rupert can grab Hunter's outstretched hand. He clings to Rupert, struggling to help haul himself out. ]

Wh - who -

[heartlands]

[he pulls him out as best he can, trying to be gentle as he speaks.]

Hey - hey, hey, it's okay...

[pyrighteous]

[ He's sobbing miserably, sorry. Covered in mud, skin blistered from the heat Belos had tried.

Speaking of which. ]

Put him back this instant. I can still salvage the experiment.

[heartlands]

No!

[he stands between the two of them immediately, pushing this version of hunter behind him.]

He's not an experiment, he's a person and he's in pain!

[pyrighteous]

He is my creation. He wouldn't even exist without me.

[ Belos looms over Rupert. ]

Has he never explained what a grimwalker is?

[heartlands]

[he looks confused for a moment, but ultimately:]

I don't care! It doesn't matter to me whether you made him or not. It doesn't give you the right to hurt him. I'm not letting you touch him.

[pyrighteous]

Shame. Well, I could try more human material for the next batch.

[ His arm extends into a monstrous green and black goop thing with a scythe on the end, which he swings at Rupert. ]

[heartlands]

Of course he has weapons, why would he not have weapons—

[with a roll of ten, he doesn't manage to completely dodge, leaving a small gash on his shoulder. with a glance to the hunter that just emerged from the mud:]

Hey - run, get out of here!

[after that, he's heading for those alchemical tools to see if there's anything he can use to fight back or guard with.]

[pyrighteous]

[ There's certainly some options here. Plenty of chemicals and reagents that look dangerous? A ferociously sharp knife that looks like it was going to be used on Hunter next. And an artificial staff, almost fully reassembled; it just need the red gem popped into the top.

Meanwhile, Hunter is indeed scrambling for cover. That leaves Belos split between two targets. He goes for Rupert first, viney tendrils reaching out to try and scoop him up. ]

Meddlesome brat.

[heartlands]

Thanks, I try! At least I'm not a bully.

[he can't identify these chemicals on sight, but he grabs whatever looks as though it might do damage, opening the bottle and throwing it at belos.

he also tries to move back away from the vines, but with a roll of four, it's not that effective.]

[pyrighteous]

[ Through sheer bloody luck, the first thing Rupert grabs is something that explodes on contact. Belos reels back, clutching at his face with a roar of pain. The vines just end up lashing around randomly instead of really grabbing Rupert; he might get smacked but not bound.

Meanwhile, guard Hunter has tossed a cloak over muck Hunter and is helping drag him back to the exit. ]

Come on! Get out of here!

[heartlands]

Yeah, you don't have to tell me twice—

[off he runs!]

[pyrighteous]

[ Back through the painting then, to the relative safety of the trees. Both Hunters collapse for a moment, the new one wheezing hard as he tries to catch his breath.

The guard whirls on Rupert. ]

What were you thinking!?

[heartlands]

[he blinks.]

What do you mean? He was going to hurt him, I had to do something.

[pyrighteous]

He could have hurt you too! He DID hurt you!

[heartlands]

Ah - it's not that bad, seriously. I'll make sure to take care of it once we get out of here.

[...]

I'm okay. Seriously. It was worth it.

[pyrighteous]

[ The guard shivers a little looking at his clone. ]

I don't like looking at other grimwalkers directly.

[heartlands]

...Sorry. But I couldn't just leave him there.

[...]

You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to, but did he really... I mean, is - that where you came from?

[pyrighteous]

[ The guard nods once, sharply. ]

The memories are blurry. I - thought they were just weird nightmares from reading scary stories in the library. But that's how all grimwalkers are made, including me.

[heartlands]

...That must have been really scary. The nightmares, and then - finding out the truth. I'm really sorry, Hunter.
