★ Character Information ★
Character Name: Hunter
Character Age: 17
Character Species: Grimwalker - an undead plant clone of a person. Thinks he’s a powerless witch, though, and acts accordingly.
Current Health: Alive but messed up; he’s even more scarred than he ought to be for this canon point, and he’s made some seriously bad decisions.
Outfit: A smaller version of the white cowl and gold armor (with horned mask) that his uncle, Emperor Belos, wore. The armor is mostly ceremonial.
Character Canon: The Owl House
Link to History: Link here! Hunter’s history is the same as canon right up until the “Learning the truth and the Day of Unity” section (AKA “Hollow Mind” in the show.)
Canon Point: During the AU version of the show finale.
Canon Iteration: Canon AU
Canon Iteration Explanation: The base change is
so small. Hunter jolted back away from the mind magic by only six inches, but it was enough to prevent him from getting pulled into his uncle’s mind alongside Luz - and therefore he never learned the truth about what he was or what his uncle was REALLY planning for the Day of Unity. Instead, he ran to his uncle/Emperor Belos to betray Luz and was drawn into his uncle’s lies all the more tightly. He believed that the Day of Unity was intended to draw all of the wild magic out of the Isles, leaving the witch population clean and pure afterwards. His uncle kept him EXTRMELY close all during the preparation for his draining spell, to the point of having Hunter at his right hand while executing the spell. When Luz showed up to interfere (as she does in canon), Hunter fought her instead, and lost. He awoke to discover his uncle squished into goo and Luz’s crew having summoned the Collector. Enraged and mourning the only family he’s ever known, Hunter took up his uncle’s staff and fought off both Luz and the Collector, at least temporarily. This began a power struggle for the Boiling Isles: Hunter styling himself as the Golden Emperor, using everything his uncle ever created against Luz trying to free the isles from his (and Belos’s) influence while the Collector and his siblings rampage around and causes BOTH of them problems. This Hunter has totally lost his chance at redemption via canon events - and he is hardened by the betrayal of Luz apparently murdering his uncle and summoning a demon from beyond the stars. By this point in the AU, he’s compensated for his lack of magic by tattooing glyphs on his arms similar to Belos’s own petrification glyphs and wielding Belos’s magical eqiupment. He believes his uncle to be dead, though sometimes he hears a voice in the back of his head that he swears sounds like his uncle, even though the last he saw of Belos was his body splattered all over the door to the Human Realm…
★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★
Skills: ★ Magitech: Hunter has learned how to create artificial sources of magic for himself. His expertise is primarily focused on making staffs, but he’s also familiarized himself with his uncle’s notes on creating doorways to other realms, coven sigils, and petrification.
★ Glyphs: Hunter has learned how to use glpyh magic courtesty of his uncle’s magic notes; he has several of them tattooed on his arms, giving him access to some basic spells (minor fire, ice, plant, and light effects), a few more complex ones (brief spurts of electricity, a personal blink spell), and one he has never used and will absolutely backfire the first time he tries (unfinished petrification glyph.)
★ Combat Training: Hunter is agile and skilled with a staff, especially with magic backing him up. But also especially WITHOUT magic backing him up. Hunter learned how to fight without access to any magic at all first. His combat style still reflects that.
Canon Abilities: ★ Witch Magic: When Hunter has access to a staff (which he will NOT have until he builds one in Folkmore), he can cast Boiling Isles-styled magic at a minor to moderate level of skill. Mostly this means he can fly around and cast lightning bolt, with maybe the occasional surge of earth shaping magic.
★ Grimwalker Biology: As a grimwalker clone of a human, Hunter has some … quirks! (Much of this is headcanon, but not too much of a stretch from actual canon.) He has bright magenta eyes that mark him as a grimwalker to anyone familiar with that kind of construct. He’s mostly made of plant material, meaning he has some amount of sensitivity to fire (and also REALLY enjoys himself a sunny day.) He technically pings as undead to anyone sensitive to such things. Otherwise, the facsimile of flesh is pretty convincing and he will vehemently deny anyone who tells him he’s not a real boy.
Role: Myth
Role Qualities/Attributes: Hunter will manifest twisting horns of green-black thorns that sprout from the top of his head. When he’s really in the thick of his role, that same green sludge will spread down his arms and legs to give him the heightened endurance and speed common to other myths. When he’s at his best/worst, his eyes grow bright blue, and he dissociates in such a way that it almost seems like he’s being possessed by his uncle. (Not actual possession, though, since Belos is an appable character.)
Role Reasoning: I really want to have Hunter lean into his dark side REALLY HARD at first. A redemption arc is inevitable for a character like Hunter, who means well even when he’s deeply in the throes of a Bad End, so the worse he starts off, the more delicious the journey back to being a good guy will be. This is a version of Hunter who has fully been subsumed by his uncle’s hatred for wild magic and witches, at least for now. I’m hoping that he’ll be actively dangerous and/or made of problems for a while until enough people realize he’s just desperately damaged and not capable of breaking out of the cycle of his life on his own.
