GARDEN OF THE GUARDS

[ The precise golden hallways fall away from you ... and you land none-too-softly in a strange and lonely forest:



The air is much colder here, but the mood (while ominous) has less of that horrific pressure to it. Tree branches twist overhead, while gnarled roots dig into the ashen ground at your feet. Scraps of white and Phoenix-pink cloth cling to the branches; there are also multiple fragments of golden masks strewn about the roots. There are several broken wood pieces here and there as well. Every so often, a broken red gem flickers from the darkness.

There is no returning to the previous level from here. There ARE several more paintings, though:

The first one depicts a starry night, with a younger looking Hunter perched on a rooftop with some books.

The second one has the Phoenix common room. It's streaked in blood and gore - whose?

The third shows a muck pit. A single pale hand claws to get out of it.

The fourth has the Emperor's Coven - a group of people in masks, with someone in a gold mask at the front.

The fifth shows Hunter face down in a shallow grave. Flapjack is perched on his back.

The sixth depicts Hunter in green face paint. and posing for a picture with friends? He seems happy.

The seventh shows a mass grave. Based on the number of golden masks and bones, there must be at least fifty corpses here. This painting resists anyone who gets close.

The eighth has a strange doorway with an eye built into it. A strange shadow flickers from spot to spot as you look at it.

The ninth has a birdcage slowly sinking into the mud. Like the grave, it resists anyone who approaches.

If you take more than a few minutes to look at all of this ... someone calls out to you. ]

Halt! In the name of the Emperor, I forbid you from entering any of those paintings!

[He's on edge, keeping as close an eye behind him as he can while taking in everything else of this new area.

But he stops when he hears the voice.]

Who's there? I've come to help.

[ Someone draped in a long white cloak and wearing a golden mask steps out of the shadows. He brandishes a small staff at Percy - similar to Belos's, but with a simpler design.

He would be intimidating, maybe, but isn't that annoying voice familiar? ]

Help? Help who?

[Each painting seems to tell a story. The morbid depiction cause him enough to hear someone speak. That voice...]

We can enter them?

[pyrighteous]

[ The guard straightens, realizing his mistake too late.

(It's absolutely Hunter's voice.) ]

I - I didn't say that! Did I say that? If I did, I shouldn't have, because that was a mistake!!

In the name of the Emperor?

[ Here's a kid right at about Hunter's height, speaking with Hunter's voice, and ... okay not wielding Hunter's staff? Instead, it's topped with something artificial: a red crystal and a white-gold wing.

He opens his mouth to say something, then spies the boy that Adrien brought with him. ]

Ew! Why did you bring one of THOSE things with you? Gross! At least put some clothes on him.

[ He all but flings his nice white cloak at Adrien. ]

[ well, the first 30 or so seconds is making sure she hasn't broken anything. she glances at the starry one first, actually appreciating it! but the second one is too familiar for her attention to be anywhere else. she knows that room, but it's never been that bloody. she definitely cleaned the walls enough time to know about the blood that was supposed to stay on and the blood that needed to be washed off! ]

...Mr. Hunter?

[pyrighteous]

[ The Guard instantly winces. ]

Why does everyone keep calling me that...?

[ The Guard stiffens at that. He's wearing a long white cloak and a golden mask. ]

I'm not Hunter!

[ It's Hunter's voice all right. ]

[as soon as he sees the muck pit and what he assumes is someone struggling to get out of it, he's approaching that one. to the voice:]

Yeah, sorry, no can do!

[ The painting shimmers, clearly capable of being entered ...

But a Hunter-shaped (and Hunter-sized) guard is quickly approaching too. ]

What? No! I forbid it! Don't make me hurt you!

[Stoat is scanning all of the paintings, trying to make the decision of which to inspect—moving towards the Phoenix one when interrupted by the voice.]

Don't care about the Emperor. Who are you? Are you with the creep?

[pyrighteous]

[ A kid about Hunter's height - with Hunter's voice - glares at Stoat from behind his golden mask. ]

He's not a creep! I'm his Golden Guard, so - yes! I'm helping him!

[ Sariel turns, putting his hands behind his head lazily. ]

[Flapjack seems like a good first step to go towards before any of the more sus doors.]

[He doesn't take long to come to that decision, so he'll have to meet that NPC later, through the door to the shallow grave.]

Yeah, yeah. That could have gone worse, right? [he ducks his head from another tentacle's swing] Can we focus on Hunter here? Not me?

[anyway, after squabbling with his Outer God for a moment, he starts to inspect his surroundings and... well, of course, he's going to look at the portrait with books in it. this is just how he is.]
