[IC] [Reverie] SEPTEMBER 2022 - PALACE GAME

[ Welcome to the inside of Hunter's heart! Potential CWs include (but are not limited to):

[Again?]

[This man is no friend. He gets no 'Percy is fine'.] How exactly did you come to be the ruler of this small plane?

[ RUDE AF.

Anyway, he laughs quietly. It's not the nicest sound. ]

I'm protecting the previous ruler, of course. He wasn't strong enough to stave off the pressures lurking outside.

[ He gestures at one of the paintings - and there indeed is Belos. In this painting, he's this golden shining protector, staving off a horrible deluge of sludge. A young man in rests beatifically in a glass casket: Hunter. ]

Previous?

[He looks again and... Oh. Oh dear. He's starting to get the shape of what this is. And this person - being - is rather unfortunate to be here. He shifts, feeling the familiar weight of his rifle with him again. Good.]

Perhaps he simply has not grown into the opportunity to do so yet.

[Present tense. Hunter is not gone, thank you.]

Entirely too late for that now. I am sorry to say that my nephew is already quite dead.

[ He gestures around at the shining halls. ]

But I shall preserve this place in his memory.

I somehow doubt that.

[He calls it out louder, like he's hoping the words reach Hunter wherever he is.]

You know, I can't say I hear anything good comes from an uncle taking over his nephew's place on a throne. A bit too theatrically tragic for my tastes.

What happened to him?

[ Something ... responds to that? It's so faint, though. And it seems to be coming from somewhere far below them.

Belos frowns at that and speaks more loudly. ]

When we first transitioned to this new version of the prison, our monster threatened to overwhelm us. If he'd remained in charge, there'd been nothing left at all.

[So this is .... Something different than whatever possession Hunter was carrying? That green monster that devoured Orthax whole? Hm.

But what was that reaction... Percy walks closer to one of the portraits - of Hunter dead - and touches one fingertip to the frame.]

Is there something to base that hypothesis on? Or was it merely an assumption you made?

[ It bends slightly under Percy's fingers. That part is perhaps not unusual. But the wall next to it ... also bends a little? It all seems very flimsy.

Belos is abruptly much closer to him. ]

Don't touch that.

[Percival looks at him, hand still hovering... and just places his hand on the wall.]

I'm afraid I already have. Why don't you want me touching it?

[ It bends under even that slight pressure.

Belos's arm ... shifts a bit? There's a flicker of that green monster that ate Orthax as a staff emerges out of nowhere. ]

You're a trespasser here. If you claim to care about the boy, you'll make your observations and then leave.

That is quite the claim to say I made.

He did eat and kill me, you know.

[But he is very interested in this.] It's also difficult for me to leave when I'm not entirely sure how I found myself here in the first place.

[Another gentle push.]

[ It bends even FURTHER under that push. The wall isn't real - it's made of canvas stretched over nothing? No. Not quite nothing. Something thick and viscous. ]

I'll be happy to assist you.

[ Belos grits his teeth, the red crystal on his staff flaring. ]

If you don't care about the boy, then by all means, keep doing what you're doing.

[He pauses where he's pushed it... but doesn't let up either. Percival looks at the man curiously.]

What will happen if I continue?

You'll likely destroy all this order I've carefully crafted, and his mind will collapse.

[ He stares at Percy. ]

Is that what you're here for? To have your revenge for him murdering you and your team?

I'm not entirely sure, really.

[He looks it over again, leaning in closer.]

I'm more curious than anything.

[An 18 on deception.... How's that insight, Belos.]

[ ALAS, a 7. Being an unquestioned Emperor has made him kinda rusty at reading people.

He untenses slightly. (The wall undulates under Percy's fingers.) ]

Oh? About what?

What all of this is. How it works, what 'order' you've put together. Am I really physically here in his mind, or is this a projection of my own thoughts somehow?

I'm not skilled in magic or spells, so these sorts of things are a mystery to me.

[ HUH. Is this a FELLOW NERD? Belos relaxes a little more. ]

It's all quite physical. If you were to die here, you would be trapped in the depths of his subconscious.

Fortunately, I'm quite skilled at mind magic, myself, so I've added this portion to keep his monster from overwhelming us.

[Fellow Nerd Alert. He'll move to look at one of the other portraits, Belos standing triumphant.]

I see. And is that skill what you also used to defeat your enemies?

[ He seems to have recently defeated a ... human child? And a harpy woman? ]

Among many others. Would you like to see an example?

[Why another child. What do you have against children, sir?]

And how much will I regret it if I say yes?

Anyway, he laughs - not unkindly this time. ]

Please, Percival. I think we're like-minded people. We could learn a lot from each other.

[ISN'T IT THOUGH. TRY BEING NICE.]

[ He considers Percy for a moment... then gestures. ]

[He casts one look back at those portraits before following after him.

He will come back, and he will help Hunter. He just needs as much of a full picture as he can first.]
